“In my work I investigate the intersections of nature and culture and the modes in which mankind harnesses and exploits - or attempts to control - natural phenomena. I build installations of animal-like creatures made of steel and salvaged leather and ask: how do we look at animals and nature? What is nature? How is the impact of human activity visible in the environment?

The combination of natural phenomena and technologies is an ongoing subject of exploration for me. I am inspired by the rough wilderness of the North as well as by the signs of human activity in the environment. The places in which I live and travel are the often the starting points for my works.

My work tell more about people than nature: about the commodification of nature, production of raw materials, imagery in advertising, the symbolical and allegorical aspects of natural phenomena, above all animals. The roots of my work are in the culture of zoos, science fiction and the idea of hybrid creatures, wunderkammers, fairy tales, and the realm of domesticated and pet animals.

My artistic practice traverses sculptural elements and objects as well as photography, drawing and video. I am interested in an ambivalent aesthetic, the simultaneity of

attractiveness and repulsiveness, the synthetic and the organic, stark geometry and the ornamental.” Kaisu Koivisto
