Sienet ovat kiehtovia olentoja – tappavia tai herkullisia. Ne eivät ole kasveja eivätkä ne kuulu eläinkuntaakaan. Tietyt sienet ja kasvit elävät symbioosissa eli ne hyötyvät symbioosiparinsa ominaisuuksista. Kärpässieni tuo mieleen shamaanit; sienipilven muoto muistuttaa nykyajan tietäjien teoista

Sienen arkkityyppisen muodon potentiaali kiinnostaa minua. Sieniä löytyy lastenkirjoista; sienihattupäisiä pikkuvelhoja vilisee varsinkin vanhoissa kuvituksissa. Kärpässieni tuo mieleen shamaanit; sienipilven muoto muistuttaa nykyajan tietäjien teoista. Pihataiteessa ja kitschissä sienillä on oma paikkansa vaikkapa kärpässieniksi maalattujen kivien muodossa. Sienien muodoista virikkeitä saaneet objektit ovat yhtä lailla kuulaankimmeltävän teräksisiä kuin möhkälemäisiä, abjekteja nahkaolioita.

Changelings is an installation of metal and leather structures which are freely based on the shape of a mushroom. Some of them have the clean-cut, sober appearance of shining steel, while the pieces which are covered with leather have an abject quality. The sizes of the works vary, the size of the largest part is 170 x 120 x 120 cm. The leather used in the works is recycled leather, i.e. worn leather coats.

The archetypical form of a mushroom fascinates me. Mushrooms abound in childrens´ books: elves with mushroom shaped hats inhabit houses which are shaped like mushrooms. The red-and-white spotted fly agaric mushroom brings into mind ancient shamans; a mushroom cloud is the iconic image of modern destructive powers. Mushrooms are common motifs in popular culture, garden decorations as well as in kitsch objects.

Installed in the forest, the organic forms of Changelings interact with nature. Their large size, materials and the geometric design of the steel parts make them into foreign objects which have invaded the nature. In the future I would like to install them in an urban environment, preferably in a large city. This may be done in various ways, one of which is to create images by combining drawings and digital images: skyscrapers bursting with mushrooms.. toadstools in a shopping mall.. techno-fungi..
